Lobmeyr in Museums

Glasmuseum Steinschönau

Osvobození 69, 471 14 Kamenický Šenov, Czech Republic

The building where the Steinschönau Glass Museum is located today is a patrician house from the late eighteenth century that is typical of the region. First owned by a glass merchant, it later came into the hands of glass manufacturers Josef and Franz Zahn, meaning that the entire history of the building is closely tied to the Czech glass industry. In 1918, Lobmeyr owner Stefan Rath bought the place and started the company’s first in-house engraving and cutting workshops in it. Much of the original furnishing, designed by Professor Witzmann, is still preserved.
In 1948, the building was nationalised: Initially used to house the Bor glassworks, it was named the home of the glass museum in 1965. Its collections specialise in engraved and cut glass and show the development of various finishing techniques from 1700 to the present, as well as featuring special exhibitions on a regular basis. Every three years, the museum hosts the International Symposium of Engraved Glass, which was initiated by former Lobmeyr owner Peter Rath. In 2023, the museum will honour the Lobmeyr company’s 200th anniversary with a special exhibition.
