In no other place can one experience the artistic concept and intellectual world of “Vienna around 1900” with such immediacy. The Leopold Museum inventory originates from the collecting activities of married couple Rudolf and Elisabeth Leopold—both doctorate ophthalmologists. Lobmeyr is represented here primarily by Josef Hoffmann’ earlier designs, all executed in what was called the “black bronzite” technique of black decor on a matte background. The designs were created at a time when black and white were at the very core of the Wiener Werkstätte’s work—another stylistic device of formal reduction. Furniture and fashion were designed this way as well. One also finds a few pieces based on designs by architect Otto Prutscher and medalist Rudolf Marschall, who was one of the few designers at Lobmeyr to design Jugendstil objects.
