A married couple, the Shimuras discovered Lobmeyr in the 1980s, rented a showroom in the up-and-coming Omote Sando district and began selling glassware through large department stores such as Mitsukoshi and Takashimaya, placing it in restaurants and bars as well. Austria and Vienna were and are particularly popular here, a great advantage for the business. Special assortments and series with signs of the zodiac, Sissi, or individual motifs, for example, have been designed on a regular basis. Japan did not originally have a glassware culture, and it was thus evolved, drink after drink, by serving drinks in the right glass at tastings and in special classes. Wine in particular: A short-stemmed tasting series that fits better into the Japanese table setting was even added to the Ballerina series. The awareness of quality is traditionally high in Japan, and there are now around 200 restaurants and bars in Tokyo that feature Lobmeyr glassware. In Paris as well, a growing number of fine Japanese restaurants were inspired to serve serve their guests in Lobmeyr. Special crystal chandeliers have been developed to illuminate large hotels and concert halls. Yuichi Shimura, son of the Shimuras, was hired by one of Japan’s most important importers of French wine, and took over the business in 2020.
