Lobmeyr in Museums

Palácio Nacional da Ajuda

Largo da Ajuda 1349-021 Lisboa, Portugal

The palace’s glass collection encompasses about 13,000 pieces, mostly from the second half of the nineteenth century to the early twentieth century. The selection largely reflects the personal taste of royal couple Louis I (1838–1889) and Maria Pia of Savoy (1847–1911), with Lobmeyr very prominently represented. It is documented that Queen Pia Maria placed large orders with Lobmeyr on several visits to Vienna. In 1888, for example, she ordered 292 pieces of Drinking Set No. 5 for 13 people, personalised with the royal couple’s initials. The set is now on display in the palace dining room.

The palace also has a great number of Lobmeyr’s Drinking Set No. 2, enough to serve a total of 150 people. There is documentation that the set was used, among other occasions, at a luncheon honouring Emperor Wilhelm II on 29 March 1905. A list of the parts that made up such a regal service is quite revealing: It includes pitchers, wine and liqueur carafes, and Bordeaux decanters; short-stemmed glasses, beer glasses, champagne coupes and flutes, Bordeaux, Burgundy, and sherry glasses, liqueur glasses, white wine glasses, punch glasses, finger bowls with plates, small jam and sorbet bowls with plates, tumblers, and cruets (probably for vinegar and oil). The service also includes delicate glass tubes—a sign of the refined court etiquette. These once contained small flower bouquets, which the guests pinned to their lapels after the meal.
