Around 2014, a whole series of international luxury hotel brands opened branches in Vienna that aimed to convey the authentic Viennese atmosphere. The Park Hyatt, located in the former headquarters of one of the most important Austrian banks, is an excellent example. Fittingly, what is perhaps the most important chandelier design of the early twentieth century can be found in the large salon of the Presidential Suite: the Cologne chandelier, originally designed by Josef Hoffmann for the Cologne Werkbund exhibition. Here, we created a version adapted to the challenging proportions of the space. We removed the upper structure, yet left the spectacular glass prisms of the main hoop, which cap the chandelier like a crown and give it its unique distinction. Given the room’s limited lines of sight, it was almost impossible to photograph the chandelier in its full glory. However, photo artist Wolfgang Thaler managed to capture fascinating new perspectives of Vienna’s most exquisite hotel suite.
