In the many years since its founding in 1913, the Salzburg Marionette Theatre, run by the Aicher family for a full century, has evolved an extensive repertoire. In addition to classical operas, the programme includes fairy tales, plays, and musicals. Today, the theatre is located between the State Theatre and the Mozarteum in a building with a storied history. The historic building was erected in 1893 by the Count Arco-Zinneberg Brewery in Kaltenhausen as a “restaurant and ballroom building” based on plans by architect Carl Demel. It was a hotel, casino, and finally home to the Salzburg Marionette Theatre since 1971. During the previous conversion in 1970, a stage and auditorium were added to the hotel’s former dining room, and two magnificent Lobmeyr chandeliers in the high baroque style were installed along with matching sconces. These luxurious lights fit so well that one might think they have always hung there. They give the puppet theatre, which continues to delight visitors with a variety of performances, a truly festive splendour.
