The Spanish Riding School is one of Vienna’s most important attractions and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Its most famous section is certainly the winter riding school, a large indoor riding arena built from 1729 to 1735 under Charles VI, designed by Johann Bernhard Fischer von Erlach and built by his son Joseph Emanuel. The hall is crowned by three monumental chandeliers, classic Viennese baroque models in gilded wrought iron, which were installed well after construction. This may seem overly luxurious for a riding hall; but this one is also often used for balls and special events, a perfect framing for the stunning chandeliers.
