Martino Gamper

Martino Gamper (*1971 in Merano, Italy) is an Italian designer living and working in London.
When Peter Rath audited a semester at the University of Applied Arts Vienna, Martino Gamper’s design was one of three projects selected by the students tobe shown as part of a glassworks exhibition. At the very first Passionswege in 2006, which became the VIENNA DESIGNWEEK the following year, Gamper experimented together with Kim Tien, making chandeliers, tableware, and a series of glasses. The “Neo” whiskey tumblers were created as part of the VIENNA DESIGN WEEK 2016. Known for his curiosity and uncompromising love of experimentation, Gamper seized the challenge to create contemporary ornaments using traditional Lobmeyr techniques. He transformed simple double-old-fashioned tumblers using glass cutting, engraving, polishing, sandblasting, hand painting, and gilding techniques. Gamper created 54 prototypes and unique items, even designing a bespoke presentation display for them. A selection is now included in the permanent Lobmeyr collection.
He is married to New Zealand artist Francis Upritchard. Gamper apprenticed as a carpenter in Merano and went on to study sculpture in Vienna. In 2000, he graduated with a master’s degree from the Royal College of Art in London under Ron Arad. Gamper made a name for himself early on through collaborative projects and as a designer and producer completing most of his projects in his own workshop.
He became internationally known in 2007 with his book 100 Chairs in 100 Days and Its 100 Ways, which documented his work dismantling 100 used chairs and putting them back together in new, surprising, and often remarkably harmonious combinations. The project was shown in London, at the Triennale in Milan, and in San Francisco, among other places. Today, Gamper is actively working on a broad variety of projects, ranging from exhibition and interior designs to his much-praised unique pieces of furniture and products for the international furniture industry. He has a busy international exhibition schedule, showing in galleries and institutions that specialize both in design and the fine arts.
