Located in the 16th district at Lorenz-Mandl-Gasse 10–16, the elongated four-storey residential complex has a large garden courtyard. The building’s 165 apartments ranged from 28 to 56 square metres in size, and each had an inside toilet—by no means common at the time—and included access to various communal facilities. Residents began moving in once construction was wrapped up in 1900/1901. The concept seen at the Lobmeyrhof is a forerunner of the Viennese municipal housing projects built during the interwar period. Designed in a simple late historicist style by architects Theodor Karl Bach and Leopold Simony, the complex was financed by the “Kaiser Franz Joseph I Endowment for People’s Housing and Welfare Institutions”, which was established in 1886. The goal was to provide affordable and hygienic housing for the workers of Vienna. An active member of the endowment, Ludwig Lobmeyr also donated a significant sum, which is why the building complex bears his name.

Ludwig Lobmeyr was also a chairman of the Kaiser Franz Josef Foundation.
