This project involved neither a spectacular chandelier nor a stunning design. The lighting elements in the Hyogo Performing Arts Center in Nishinomija, Japan are rather minimal and go almost unseen—but are interesting nonetheless. In 2003, the year the project was implemented, LED technology was still in its infancy. This was one of the first uses of LED elements in high-class lighting. Development, together with our Japanese partner, took more than two years. We essentially took a few hundred cut glass half-spheres about the size of tennis balls and combined them with LED technology on site to create several optical “curtains” made of lighting chains. These bathe one of the vestibules in a fairy-tale glow.
