HTL Kramsach

Mariatal 2, 6233 Kramsach

The origin of the college in Kramsach goes back to the state of the Austrian glass industry after the Second World War. With the Bohemian factories no longer available, it was necessary to bring parts of the North Bohemian glass industry—and above all its specialists—to Austria, with Lobmeyr owner Hans Harald Rath playing a central role. Several glassworks were founded, in Imst and Kufstein (today the Riedel company) for example. A Lobmeyr refinery named “Kramsacher Werkstätten GmbH” was established as part of this initiative in Kramsach Mariatal, employing many specialists who had fled from North Bohemia. A glassworking technical college was planned for diagonally opposite this manufactory—in which Hans Harald Rath once again played a founding role—with the aim of training the new young workers urgently needed in the Austrian glass industry. On 10 January 1948, classes at the glassworking college in Kramsach began.

In the 1960s, after an expansion, the school opened its doors to all glass apprentices from Austria. Since the 1970s, the educational programme and the campus have been continuously expanded. What began as a glassmaking school with a few dozen students has now grown into a college providing modern technical and design training to around 350 young people. Lobmeyr’s apprentices still attend the college for their theory lessons to this day.
