Josef Hoffmann’s masterpiece for the Cologne “Werkbund”
This archetype of the Jugendstil chandelier was designed by Josef Hoffmann for the Werkbund Exhibition in Cologne 1914 and is regarded one of the milestones in Austrian design of the early 20th century. The original prototype is still on display in Vienna’s Museum of Applied Arts.
The chandelier is made of brass with a nickel finish. The crystal beads are made from hand-cut lead-free beads in contrast to wonderful large rectangular stones in the main belt. These alternate with cast brass floral décors.
The chandelier is available in different sizes from 60 cm to 100 cm diamter. Beside various finishes we offer custom designs on the main belt.
The design inspired for many spin-offs and different applications such as sconces or ceiling lights and simplified versions with reduced details.
The original Cologne chandelier at the MAK in Vienna is made of iron and is the highlight of their Art Deco collection. It was a donation to the Museum and is part of the permanent exhibition.
in 2018 it was one of the highlights of the “Wege der Moderne” exhibition alongside masterpieces by other contributers of the Early Modernity such as Oswald Haerdtl.
