LOBMEYR Haus Grieskirchen (historic point)

Moosham 9, 4710 Moosham, Austria

Josef Lobmeyr was born in Grieskirchen in 1792, son of master dyer Joseph Mathias Lobmeyr and Theresia Hölzl. The historical photo shows the old “Dyer’s House”, where the future Lobmeyr founder was born. Young Lobmeyr learned to work with glass from his uncle, who ran an inn and a glassmaking shop. After apprenticing, he went to Vienna, where he founded the Lobmeyr company in 1823.
The house where Josef Lobmeyr was born was purchased by the municipality in 1857 and used as a public hospital; it was demolished in 1962. Josef’s success continues to shape the town of Grieskirchen to this day. Nearby Tollet Castle, for example, often shows exhibitions on the subject of glass. It is located a few kilometres west of the Grieskirchen city centre, and the former location of the house can be easily reached on foot along a scenic paved path.

The site, once the ancestral seat of the noble Protestant family Jörger, is today the KULTURAMA Schloss Tollet, a museum featuring fascinating yearly exhibitions. In 2022, Lobmeyr was the highlight of the “LegendärGLASSpektakulär.Schön” exhibition.
