Peter Noever

Peter Noever (*1941 in Innsbruck) is an Austrian designer and curator of art, architecture, and the media.

After criticism of the MAK’s transition away from applied arts and craftsmanship, it was not until the sixth generation of Lobmeyr that a rapprochement took place.

It all started with Peter Noever’s variation of the Viennese “Achtel-Glas”, originally designed for the MAK’s new restaurant. The “MARS” collection later emerged as a series of artistic interventions on the classic Loos tumblers, followed by other fruitful collaborations.

As early as the late 1960s, he was undertaking projects with progressive architects such as Hans Hollein, Walter Pichler, and others.

In 1970, he brought Austria’s first concept store to life, Section N, managed by his first wife, Katarina Noever. Before closing in 1987, the shop was a contact point and platform for contemporary design from all over the world. From 1986 to 2011, Noever was artistic director and managing director of the MAK – Austrian Museum for Applied Arts in Vienna. In addition to his own design work, he also taught at the University of Applied Arts Vienna and the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna and was founder and editor-in-chief of the architecture magazine Umriss.
