Louise Rath

Louise Rath (*1973 in Vienna) is an Austrian textile, screen printing, and embroidery artist and part of the 6th Lobmeyr generation.

She studied tapestry at the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna and attended the Kunstschule Weißensee Berlin on a merit scholarship. Her brightly coloured, large-format screen print collages of animals and plants, some also embroidered, evoke beauty at first glance—but a second look reveals critique of technology and the domination of nature in the Anthropocene era. Based out of her art studio in the 16th district of Vienna, Rath often designs coloured glass paintings for J.&L. Lobmeyr as well as her own fashion pieces.

In addition to numerous unique pieces and decorative designs, Louise Rath has also created colourful glass paintings for Lobmeyr. The motifs are light and delicate, seemingly naturalistic, but always with a twist. For example, in the 2009 goblet “The Danceof Death”, glass painting and engraving visually merge to give the piece a highly unique three-dimensionality. In 2020, she designed “High Seas”, a series of maritime decor pieces delicately matched with the extremely fine pastels of the classic Drinking Set No. 267, “Alpha”.
