Aldo Bakker

Aldo Bakker (*1971 in the Netherlands) creates objects that tell stories in a language all their own.

Aldo Bakker designed the Reigen glass series for Lobmeyr in 2020: six tumblers, three which open slightly towards the top, and three which taper. As is often the case with Bakker, they are shaped in harmony with nature, radiating warmth and charm in an almost human way. For this reason, the six tumblers were named individually, based on Arthur Schnitzler’s play Reigen. The three fluted glasses can be placed atop each of the three tapered ones, creating 18 possible combinations—and 18 different personalities. “It’s about a continuous line, like a balloon. The glasses stack naturally atop each other, but each has its own character,” explains the designer.

Elegant curves and facets, monochromatic surfaces, and flawless execution are the hallmarks of their elegance and autonomy. Freed from conventional design and thus from ordinary usage patterns, these beautiful objects seem to subvert their primary role as a product. Instead, each of Bakker’s glasses, stools, tables, and other items is a unique character that invites us to join the dialogue. Aldo Bakker was born into an elite design family, the son of avant-garde jewellery designer Emmy van Leersum and droog co-founder Gijs Bakker. He rejected formal art and design studies, instead acquiring his education in the intensive study of such unconventional artists as composer Luigi Nono, painter Giorgio Morandi, and architect Carlo Scarpa, sharing their profound interest in the language of each medium of choice. Bakker’s work has been shown in numerous solo and group exhibitions and is represented in leading international art and design collections.
